they appear to be buying. but in amounts that, for now, won't really move the market...
[12/10/2024 10:17 AM] tradingclosed
(obviously, there is other flow out there who could move the market. don't lose sight off that)
[12/10/2024 10:19 AM] volsignals.com
A combination of factors here are changing the path implied by the hedging of the dealer positions for the time being:
(i) As I predicted in the morning meeting- the largest inventory below spot levels did move.
**Why it matters:**
*The position had outsized everything around it- and being below the money, but within range, the hedging flows associated with it would have increasingly compelled a grind lower towards $6035*
Without it, those **decay flows are no longer a drag on index behavior through the afternoon lull**
(ii) ...additionally, the $6075-80 CS has evolved into a greater volume of dealer longs on the $6075 strike, and the shorts on the $6080 strike coming from the customer short Iron Condor, have been reduced as well.
**Positions on both sides of $6050 have evolved in such a way as to open up a path higher >> $6075 >> through the session**
***All that having been said- I do not lean extensively on the dealer profile for the first two hours, for two reasons:***
***-Other flows are greater during this period = more noise & potential divergence from implied path***
***-Hedging influence arising out of 0DTE positions are technically weakest at the open, gradually increasing in strength into the close***

just when I thought I was getting accustomed to the $cash indicator; missed it on the option strikes
[12/10/2024 10:21 AM] volsignals.com
Prescription at the moment = contained range, weak bullish trend, target $6075
[12/10/2024 10:22 AM] volsignals.com
for context, the flows compelling the drift are only about 10-20% of what we'd have seen yesterday. Not a strong tell here and we are at risk of slipping into less supportive ranges rather easily

someone just tried to trade their grouping of swaps in a way that attempts to mask if they are buyer or sellers

If that does happen, i prob won't call it the STRONGEST just yet - would like to give a little more time for a potentially stronger one to appear. just given the time of the day (and how busy it can gt around now)

just want to note that currently, Charm is showing pretty strong hedging buying flow if we are above the 6065 (6070 is a dead spot however). Pretty good contender for a pin at the 6075

yeah my base case would have been to recover some of the range we lost to the selling pressure associated with yesterday's late afternoon hedging.
I tend to favor the view: "why move right *before* a known unknown?"

so silly
[12/10/2024 11:19 AM] volsignals.com
This price action is a good example of why I tend to avoid trading the opens unless I have high conviction (eg., Sep30th, Nov21st).
Flows from outside our lens (dealer hedging) are strong at the open and sometimes into the London close (11:30 EST)
Combine this with the nature of the options hedging flows:
- Yes, there are hedging footprints on the open (sometimes this makes for sizable quick wins like in the dates mentioned above)
- - but after the wider TF dealers/firms "true-up" their delta heading into / at the start of US RTH, then what we're left with is weaker ***by definition***
- Contrast this with EOD flows- yes, those are strong, too... but EOD is when the short dated option hedging flows are at their greatest.
For decay related drift, I start to look for activity to dry up into the lunch period, and look for signs of the price following its prescription- so to speak
I see us dancing on a cliff's edge with flows still range-compressing (long gamma), neutral (low, suppressive charm values) and approaching a fork sooner or later unless positioning changes:
- Above $6060, drift >> $6075
- Below $6060, drift >> $6035
Technically, the down case ($6035) would imply less realized vol on a close/close basis, given y'day's settlement, which is important for passing the baton to the *next* likely wider timeframe buyer (vol target/vol control)
[12/10/2024 11:28 AM] tradingclosed

[12/10/2024 11:38 AM] volsignals.com
I tend to hold in mind a very basic, caveman heuristic for nice round levels providing support- if only transient- whether or not the dealer profile implies it
[12/10/2024 11:38 AM] tradingclosed
@VolSignals.com - i would take this period to clearly be "No Signal" for my data. so one would think this implies your flows are going to dominate the market here
[12/10/2024 11:40 AM] tradingclosed
M Post-LDN Close summary:
consistent volumes being traded. but we are far off a balance being achieved here. some of the swaps are nearly 80bps spread from others. this is a particularly wide spread.
[12/10/2024 11:41 AM] tradingclosed
all of this is to say that, for the Swaps Data, we are 'No Signal' and that suggests that VolS's data flows will dominate here

for MM's it is

but for the majority of the market, it they will roll after the weekend
[12/10/2024 12:02 PM] tradingclosed
there are some other factors in play at the moment that will make this Q roll even busier than other End of Year Rolls
[12/10/2024 12:03 PM] tradingclosed
but those extra volumes will end up being signal rich for us. so it's a help if anything

oh i see... well, if i could answer a little bit nuanced:
i think next week will def be 'stay at terminal' if you can. there should hopefully be a lot to trade on. but i wouldn't say Roll Weeks are exclusively the best weeks to trade on the signals. mainly because our best signals come when we can see ETF APs doing 'stuffs'. and they don't really care if it's end of contract week or not. they trade so many expiries/durations, that it's not like they bunch up at one expiry that they all need to roll anyways
[12/10/2024 12:22 PM] tradingclosed
but i would def think next week - particularly the first half - could get a little 'loose'

Some nice volume and flip on the bid/ask delta at the low there but need to clear 6067 ES for anything meaningful

so.... even tho 20bps of annualised interest doesn't sound like a lot, once you factor in that the loan amounts we are talking about are often over half a yard ($500mil) and extra 0.20% of interest, over a 2 year duration is solid amount of money. especially for a Prime Broker or IB whose entire business model is collecting those little 0.10's of interest...

**BOX PRINT AT
ES: 6067.25 // SPX: $6057**
*finalllly got a new Box Print. It is also our STRONGEST OF MORNING with the OTC data showing it was traded at across multiple swaps (which makes it easier to assume it was an atb. which is what we most looking for)*
[12/10/2024 12:46 PM] tradingclosed
so... to amswer what is pronb the first question out there: how do we view the cluster notes?
[12/10/2024 12:47 PM] tradingclosed
first thing to grokk is that the place the beige (cluster) lines are marked is way less precise than the Blue lines. they are essentially me 'eyeballing' the center mass of the cluster.
[12/10/2024 12:48 PM] tradingclosed
this here is good eg. because we now have the strongest of the morning line there (the OTC's confirm). so you can see how there is about 0.75 difference between the two lines
[12/10/2024 12:49 PM] tradingclosed
which in the grand scheme of things in nothing. so i wouldn't get too carried away with the difference. but it is a good illustration of how the cluster line is approx of the meaningful mark. and the Blue line is more meaningful
[12/10/2024 12:49 PM] tradingclosed
but, what if we only have a cluster and no blue line? how to read that?
[12/10/2024 12:50 PM] tradingclosed
so... my trading action with a cluster is "stop. get flat (if not flat already) and wait for fresh Signal Set"
[12/10/2024 12:51 PM] tradingclosed
cluster's mostly mean pause/chop. but they can also mean reversal. so i want to be positioned to take advantage of a reversal IF that is in fact what is about to happen
[12/10/2024 12:51 PM] tradingclosed
in this case, the fact that we have a STRONGEST up here suggests to me that we actually just pause for a bit
[12/10/2024 12:52 PM] danielbonsoms
Morning extends past LN close? You define as 1:00PM ET?
[12/10/2024 12:52 PM] tradingclosed
STRONGEST MORNING LINE mostly means "we Mean Revert here for a X amount of time"

[12/10/2024 12:53 PM] tradingclosed

[12/10/2024 12:54 PM] tradingclosed

Have your blue boxes lined up with vwap on SPX/SPY in the last few days?
Have you noted any similarirites to those prints and cash VWAP thru time?
[12/10/2024 1:15 PM] tradingclosed
sometimes yes. but mostly not. as the day goes on, it get harder and harder to move a daily vwap (because the amount of new volumes become less and less 'impactful')
[12/10/2024 1:16 PM] tradingclosed
whereas the boxes aren't tied to any such constraints. so they can print higher or lower at any point of the day without being anchored to a baseline of volume holding it back
[12/10/2024 1:17 PM] dogman3135
excellent, ty!
[12/10/2024 1:17 PM] tradingclosed
which is what a VWAP is... which is why a VWAP can be less accurate as the day goes on - because it doesn't filter out previous volume. but rather it filters it **in**
[12/10/2024 1:17 PM] tradingclosed
tbc - i love VWAPs. i think they are an important tool. but they have very serious limitations
[12/10/2024 1:18 PM] tradingclosed
like... let's say you wanted to get short here for a longer term trade. you had a lot of size to do. so you set an algo to sell at the vwap
[12/10/2024 1:18 PM] dogman3135
couldn't agree more!
[12/10/2024 1:19 PM] tradingclosed
well...you first Q needs to be "what timeframe VWAP will i use? because if it is too long a time-frame, then i run the risk of spot never seeing the mark and i don't get filled"
[12/10/2024 1:19 PM] tradingclosed
"and if it's too short a time frame, maybe i get horrible fills."
[12/10/2024 1:20 PM] dogman3135
can you define "longer term trade"?
For me, and just my experience, I only look at intraday vwap... and past the intra-day, I literally don't follow them any more.
I know many use weekly and monthly and all that, but I've never.
[12/10/2024 1:20 PM] dogman3135
yeah there you go; agreed
[12/10/2024 1:20 PM] tradingclosed
and what we believe is you could use out Boxes and Lines to set price-averages that are likely to get 'touched' and you can get filled on
[12/10/2024 1:21 PM] dogman3135
interesting!
[12/10/2024 1:21 PM] tradingclosed
sure. so let's say i want to sell 2000 ES based on some trade thesis. and i want the delta/drectional bias. so i'm not hedging.
[12/10/2024 1:21 PM] dogman3135
looking to the left at your screen here.
[12/10/2024 1:21 PM] dogman3135
would you then infer that from here we could rise to 6067ish?
[12/10/2024 1:22 PM] tradingclosed
and i plan to hold until some sorta target. say, oh for eg - NVDIA's next earnings number
[12/10/2024 1:23 PM] tradingclosed
so i would do an average sell on ES. and i'm in no enourmous rush. i'd rather take all day to get filled at a good entry. rather than blow up the book. might be good to hide my order as well by going slow

So would a common reason why we abandon MR line / strongest morning be some sort of catalyst?
[12/10/2024 1:37 PM] danielbonsoms
For example a 1pm treasury auction surprise could cause some trend ?
[12/10/2024 1:37 PM] tradingclosed
yeah. so News catalyst would be a common reason
[12/10/2024 1:37 PM] tradingclosed
yep forsure
[12/10/2024 1:38 PM] tradingclosed
or sometimes it can be "the fella in charge of the Norwegian Sovereign Fund decided he doesn't like Apple any more."
[12/10/2024 1:38 PM] tradingclosed
those ones are better for us. because those flows aren't triggered by news everyone can see. but they absolutely start to change the nature of the microstucture elements we track. so we can get a but of a heads-up when they happen
[12/10/2024 1:39 PM] tradingclosed
things like - sudden pops of rising volumes in some of the swaps. we got that yesterday - rising volumes. but sadly, we didn't get the better/clearer of leading signals:
[12/10/2024 1:40 PM] tradingclosed
descending or ascending boxes printing away from the line
[12/10/2024 1:40 PM] tradingclosed
which usually means: market is moving from Mean Revert Mode to Trending Mode
[12/10/2024 1:42 PM] tradingclosed
we haven't got any of those here. Trending Mode signals. which is why am flat and not short. because i don have anything yet that could contradict my baseline assumption that we are simply on our way back to ES: 6067.75
[12/10/2024 1:42 PM] dogman3135
do you always wait for the clear signal to enter, or do you trade anticipating either of these scenarios materialize?

Do these swap trades you monitor happen @ typical times each day?

[12/10/2024 1:56 PM] volsignals.com
We're still in suppressive passive flow territory- index is trying to hold the $6050 level but if we slip towards $6045 then the passive selling begins to ramp up rather quickly.
My shorts are underwater on decay but I'm looking at a break of the intraday lows to add more size to the $6040 P long
approaching "decision time" into final stretch

[12/10/2024 1:57 PM] dogman3135
oh yeah... sorry, new to this chat but yeah... I break down each trading day by timeframes, and London Close is one of my main points of interest for flows.
[12/10/2024 1:58 PM] tradingclosed
the index should move a bit off these volumes. it's just that only about half the time can i see which direction. there are ways for them to trade the swaps that would confuse the, like, 3 people who are watching them
[12/10/2024 1:58 PM] tradingclosed
and this is one of those times where i can't tell direction
[12/10/2024 1:59 PM] dogman3135
So, when you're following the ETF AP's are you looking at swap based ETF's only? Aren't AP's just connecting MM to Advisor to create/redeem shares and AUM thru time?
[12/10/2024 1:59 PM] tradingclosed
but, using a heuristic based on notional sizes of the trades, i'd expect the index to do a little 5 point rip or rug here soon
[12/10/2024 2:00 PM] tradingclosed
but doesn't that MM then have to then purchase or dump stocks to meet that order?
[12/10/2024 2:01 PM] tradingclosed
or what if they - the AP - used synthetics (swaps) - doesn't the bank that sold the swap then have to go shopping to make sure they are flat by close?
[12/10/2024 2:01 PM] dogman3135
Last 2 hours is when higher volume / tightest spreads occur for every stock; it's when NAV based funds make their biggest moves so trading volume has slowly thru time become more and more concentrated to The Close.

this is painful, these are probably the types of days where it's a smarter trade to buy an ITM Put or ITM -> OTM Put Spread to express a short delta bias while at least having a more favorable theta profile into the final stretch
[12/10/2024 2:02 PM] tradingclosed
and there you go... there's your 5-ish point move the volumes they traded suggests
[12/10/2024 2:04 PM] tradingclosed
usually what we see AFTER those moves is either a)more swaps being traded that suggest we continue on; or b) a pause/no more swaps being traded that suggests the trade got filled and we are back to waiting for the next signal/s
[12/10/2024 2:04 PM] tradingclosed
you don't need me to tell you whether a or b happened. spot ripping right back should tell you that
[12/10/2024 2:05 PM] tradingclosed
this is not a bad trade idea. nice structure
[12/10/2024 2:05 PM] dogman3135
So, I'm not the MM and don't have that background myself, but my experience with them is they deliver or receive in-kind the underlying components of the ETF via the create/redeem process.
So someone goes outloud and buys 1M shares of QQQ on screen offer; let's argue one MM sold it all to them (and they're short 1M shares) and they immediately hedge their book (either futures or with stock).
Then their backoffice person logs into their AP portfolio with whomever they clear thru (GS, Baml, etc) and enters in an order to in-kind create 1M shares off their prop book.
The MM will then have all those underlying components (they bot as hedge to their short QQQ) in-kind redeemed off their book to the Advisor, and they recieve 1M shares to flatten their short 1M share QQQ book.
And so they're flat and ready to trade again the next day, and Advisor to QQQ just received 1M shares worth of underlying QQQ components.
[12/10/2024 2:07 PM] dogman3135
I don't know if it's due to that in particular, or more just how the business of running money has become.
Since "everyone is marked to NAV" then if you're an index tracking fund you can't have any TE to your index; you trade MOC.
So all the volume heads that direction.
[12/10/2024 2:07 PM] tradingclosed

Approaching $6035, our target all along- and this options position is even larger than it was coming into the day (probably thanks to some of us here in the group?)
This is where it gets interesting- the option premiums are very cheap- doesn't mean we can't move through them swiftly.
There's clearly aggregate selling going on in excess of whatever the charm implication is. Several days now where selling pressure has persisted, and this is increasingly reminiscent of July- for example. (low IV, large moves through intense long gamma profiles...eventually resulting in explosive RV)
I opened a small-ish sized position today when $6050 first felt vulnerable- I bought $6045 P for $2.20 and $6040 P for approximately $1 average for a total outlay of around $6.5k- I should have been more liberal with my trade size given
(i) lack of contradictory signals from RTM Mean Reversion / Balance indicators
(ii) strong charm flows in the "void" period where volumes dry up awaiting the closing rush-
What I'm glad I did, as I write this, was lay off the majority of the premium via 1 x 2 backspreads to the $6030 line which have a real chance of paying me off exponentially if we get a sell through the gamma-void associated with the lower half of the IC PS
House money, squared

meaning - IB are lending out Today's Rate (today's funding rate. not today's Fed Funds)
[12/10/2024 3:39 PM] tradingclosed
so they only have today to flatten that. otherwise they are taking risk that tomorrow's rate is higher/lower

so they need to flatten today.
[12/10/2024 3:40 PM] tradingclosed
now it's possible they wanted to wait for all the CPI bettooots to get their bets in (ie - borrow money to put trades on). but they still need to flatten before close

the difference today is that this smaller selling didn't have to go **against** your flow. and because of that, they prob ended up being the wind in eachother sails
[12/10/2024 4:22 PM] dogman3135
**I asked one of my banks what they thought on the sell prog today, and their answer was this (single stock land):**
14:30:50 90% of it is momentum unwind (... See RDDT APP SPOT types)
.. Last 10% => MDB / AI / ORCL action sentiment weighing on group ... and throw in: MDB saying still no scaled AI workloads + ORCL's RPO down q/q and taking up the interest in small DCs (not just mega-projects) ..
[and, I guess, market forgetting about AI for a day and chasing Quantum. For a day]
And then CPI tomorrow, nobody wants to step in front

When you see the swaps trading, does it have anything to do with levered HF's de-grossing their book too?
Profit taking on momo names was biggly yesterday and a smidge of that follow thru today as well.
[12/10/2024 4:55 PM] tradingclosed
Could be. Less likely. It more likely is the aforementioned ETF AP.
BUT, the more nuanced answer is:
If it is on occasion them, the impact on the index would be the same. Because they would - effectively and reductively - closing out loans tied to equities (or rates products) with Primes/IBs. And then those Primes/IBs would need to flatten the implications of taking back the delta risk of said equities
[12/10/2024 4:56 PM] tradingclosed
Meaning, they (the primes/IBs) would need to do some selling on the tape.
[12/10/2024 4:57 PM] tradingclosed
What's different is the time pressures. They would have all day to be able to try to match the demand to new paper. But... If they are getting hit with one way flow all day (like in the eg you suggest) then they would prob wanna get going rather than wait for counter flow to magically appear
[12/10/2024 4:57 PM] tradingclosed
But again - for reasons related to which swaps traded, the combos AND the timing, what I was tracking was very clearly ETF APs
[12/10/2024 4:57 PM] dogman3135
Yeah which I feel ties together with seeing the momentum custom basket unwinds the last few days without any big -1000 TICK's which to me just reads as controlled selling (buyers strike) as grosses are reduced.
[12/10/2024 4:58 PM] dogman3135
That is interesting
[12/10/2024 4:58 PM] dogman3135
I thought I knew the ETF capital markets inside and out, but that's a portion I just didn't have awareness of.
